Autocalls / Robocalls – We all know automated phone calls. They are the recorded messages that interrupt our evening dinners, weekend afternoons, and, increasingly, plague our cell phones. They also remain one of the most cost-effective means of delivering brief and timely messages to people often unreachable by other means. We rarely use these as a standalone tactic, preferring to use them to highlight awareness of soon-to-arrive direct mail or telephone town halls.
Live Calls – We use the term “live calls” to differentiate from automated calls. These programs originate in domestic call centers and have professionals in persuasion on the other end of the line. They know how to keep respondents on the phone and get answers to issue- and candidate-preference questions. Often we are able to match regional (i.e. upper Midwest, Southern, etc.) accents if desired.
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) Calls – Also known as touch-tone calls or push-button polls, these calls, in which the respondent hears an automated recording in which they are prompted to “Press 1” or “Press 2” to register selections, typically serve one of two purposes. First, when the sample size is large enough, they can legitimately be used to measure public opinion on 1-4 issues, very quickly and very affordably. Second, these calls can be extremely effective in pushing a persuasion message under the guise of an opinion poll.
Telephone Town Halls – Telephone town halls simultaneously connect thousands of people to hear from experts and learn more about an issue. Here’s how it typically works: On a given day, we would send an autocall to thousands of targets inviting them to a telephone town hall to occur two days later. The voters receive an in-bound call-in number to use at the time of the event. At the time of the town hall, we send another outbound call to capture anyone that didn’t hold on to the in-bound number. During the town hall, we present our case, answer curated questions via live moderator, and invite people to act on our client’s desired action.
Patch-Through Calls – These calls directly connect voters to their elected officials. Using precise targeting, we pre-select residents from a voter file and commence outbound live-operator calls to them. Once on the line, we give constituents our pitch, identify where they stand on our issue, and directly connect them legislators’ office staff to make their voices heard.
